Thoughts on Spiritual Discipline

Superficiality is the curse of our age…. The desperate need today is not for a greater number of intelligent people, or gifted people, but for deep people.

-Richard Foster, Celebration of Discipline

A life is either all spiritual or not spiritual at all. No man can serve two masters. Your life is shaped by the end you live for. You are made in the image of what you desire.

-Thomas Merton

Prayer is commission. Out of the quietness with God, power is generated that turns the spiritual machinery of the world. When you pray, you begin to feel the sense of being sent, that the divine compulsion is upon you.

-E. Stanley Jones

Oh, brethren, let us try to realise that Jesus Christ is a Host of treasures, and riches, and grace, always pleading in the midst of the Glorious Church of the Redeemed! We cannot exaggerate the power; we cannot exaggerate the efficacy of the pleading of this Victim, Jesus Christ, Who, "by One Offering hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified."

 -Fr Ignatius, 1891

The Practice of Confession
“When a Catholic comes from confession, he does truly, by definition, step out into that dawn of his own beginning… in that brief ritual God has really remade him in His own image. He may be grey and gouty, but he is only five minutes old.”

Where to find...

A director is a fellow traveler. They're not there to help you get your life smoothed out, but to lead you into a closer relationship with God.

The retreat time can help you get back in touch with parts of yourself that had been bypassed in daily life for the sake of efficiency or to avoid the pain.
